Deciding to work, or not to work with a coach, is an important decision. With that in mind, I've provided answers to the most commonly asked questions about personal coaching so you can make an informed decision that is right for you and your specific situation.

What is a Certified Life Coach?

A Certified Life Coach is a trusted coach who can help you identify and uncover those things that keep you from reaching your potential. It is a typically a one-on-one relationship, although group coaching is also common. Effective coaching provides a supportive and non-judgmental place to help you create what you want for yourself, your life, and your career. Finding the right coach can help you become more strategic, while also acquiring the tools and resources that can help you achieve your goals. It consists of steps to help you identify your behaviors, thoughts, attitudes, and what drives you to succeed. Life coaching can also help you break bad habits, acquire new methods, make positive progress, and ultimately achieve your potential!

What types of individuals have Life Coaches?

All kinds of people work with professional Coaches to help attain their goals. In fact, I still work with multiple coaches myself to this day. The best coaches have coaches! They understand the importance of investing in themselves, and in being their very best too. Life Coaches work with people in many areas. Personally, I choose to focus on life, career, and transition coaching. Working with a coach is best for those who want to take initiative in their own life, and who also understand the importance of lifelong learning, and personal growth and development. People who get a Life Coach are typically committed to leading a more fulfilling life and are willing to do the work needed to make that happen.

How will Coaching help me make progress?

For starters, it's important to point out that results vary depending on why you are working with a coach, as well as how committed you are personally to making progress. For example, if you were to hire me to help you professionally, I can help you make your current job more satisfying, gain better focus on managing your work, and even market your self more effectively due to increased self-confidence and a increased understanding of your unique talents and giftedness. If your reasons are more personal in nature, you can improve your relationships, overcome negative behaviors, improve your health, grow spirituality, and even discover your unique purpose in life and how you can fulfill it. With coaching you can live a more balanced, joyous life while making your goals and dreams a reality!

What happens in a typical Life Coaching Session?

Each session is tailored to the individual needs of the client. In my professional coaching, once we get started, the client drives the coaching agenda. In the beginning, we discuss what you are committed to accomplishing through our work together and we create a plan to achieve those goals and outcomes. Periodically, I give assignments to direct your progress, as well as serve as an accountability partner throughout the coaching relationship. We work together to acknowledge and overcome obstacles, explore possible alternatives, and most importantly celebrate your success. With the conclusion of each coaching session, we revisit goals, evaluate the next steps, and make a commitment to follow-through on at least one action item prior to our next session.

Can't I just do it all by myself? Do I really need to work with a coach?

All of us have limitations. Life coaching takes you above and beyond your own limitations. More often than not, people try to reach their full potential, but don’t realize what stands in their way, often because they are walking around with blinders on. Personal coaching offers an unbiased perspective. It helps you realize your patterns and habits, both good and bad. Most people experience that they are more efficient and more effective when working with a coach. Coaching not only makes your goals and dreams attainable, it gives you the much needed encouragement most people need along the way in order to stay focused.

How is Coaching different from Counseling or Therapy?

This is a very important question. And to clarify, I am not a licensed psychologist or therapist. There's a big difference. While coaching is often therapeutic, it is not therapy. Coaching is distinct from traditional methods of therapy, because it is not designed to address psychological issues. The focus of coaching is to help you identify your goals, achieve them, and develop constructive habits. There is little emphasis placed on the past. Instead, the focus is on creating what you want now and in the future. It's important to note that a recommendation to see a licensed therapist or psychologist may be made if your challenges lie outside the realm of coaching and my personal areas of expertise.

What is your coaching session cancellation policy?

I require a 24 hour notice to cancel a session - otherwise, you forfeit your investment in that session. Coaching sessions are paid for in advance at the beginning of each month. I currently offer two or four sessions per month, with each session lasting one hour.

How long do people work with a coach?

This varies from coach to coach, and from client to client. However, it's important to point out that I will not work with a client who is not willing to make at least a 6 months investment in themselves. The first couple of months are devoted to identifying your self-limiting beliefs. The next couple of months are used to develop patterns and new ways of thinking to overcome those beliefs. Doing this work early in the process is an essential piece to understanding why you may not be getting the results you desire, and how you can move forward on your goals and dreams with positive momentum.

Are my sessions strictly confidential?

What we discuss in our coaching sessions is held in strict confidence and is not shared with others. However, coaching discussions are not privileged for legal purposes. The privilege of confidentiality that exists for clergy, therapists and attorneys is not granted to coaches. That said, my coaching is a confidential process. Your personal information is protected.
